Tazewell's Favorite Eccentric #10

by Sarah Rose
Tazewell's Favorite Eccentric #10 contains several topics that may be triggering so please read with care. Sarah shares stories from childhood to present day in this text heavy zine. A friend's suicide, molestation, her brother's death when she was twelve, promiscuity, body image issues, addiction, and thoughts on activism are some of the topics inside this issue.
This zine was one of my favorite reads of 2011.
My bones bear witness to history like the rings of a tree. This thick skull has seen more fractures and splinters, has born more concussions than you have fingers, Maybe toes, too.

Sarah writes about her drug addiction (some parts made me cringe so read with care), getting clean and her move to Philadelphia. She writes about falling in love with the city & her girlfriend, volunteering at the Willian Way Community Center and how she became a balloon animal artist.
A great follow-up zine to the happenings in issue ten.
"I'm dealing with sobriety and poverty and family guilt. But I'm also working through those things to navigate this life I'm trying to live and find my place in things."

by Maranda
Maranda touches on identifying as genderless, using the pronoun 'they' and talking with others about gender. They include some wonderful suggestions for people who want to support their friends living with mental illness, like providing support while they are in the hospital and at home. Maranda also writes about self-care and shares some great tips. They also write about being 300 days sober and explain clean time vs. recovery time.
I'm not a girl. Maybe my dress and my vulva are confusing you? Ask yourself why that confuses you. Ask yourself why using a different pronoun, why using more inclusive language scares you. Ask yourself how your confusion and your assumptions and your fears might be harming those around you.

I like Maranda's writing because they make you think and question things which is important in personal growth & how we treat others. Survival, living with mental illness, and self-care is the focal point of this issue. Maranda writes about making lists of priorities, their thoughts on mythical crazy artists, and how not to romanticize mania.
I wanted to make a zine about creating magical, artistic, creative, meaningful daily lives, so this is it. I get a lot of questions about that sort of thing, and I wanted to make a space to answer those questions thoughtfully and with care.

$2/56 pages/Half size
by Kelli
In August 2000, Kelli took a business trip to India and this super text heavy zine documents her adventure. I like Kelli's writer's voice, her words make you feel as though you're sitting down together listening to the retelling of her trip. And the details! She describes the environment, culture, people, and food so wonderfully. Kelli writes about Taiwan, Singapore, and various parts of India. Her comical stories include an Indian psychic, a cursed talisman, high class vegetarian food, low class, shoes, and lots more.
We were feeling tribal, so we wrapped our hair up in traditional scarves. Liane bought a liter of some alcoholic local drink made out of coconuts. We sang and drank and basically annoyed our driver as we crept out of the jungle.

(two love fragments)
$2/32 pages/Half size
by patrokolos
Patrokolos has created a split zine with himself, both sides have a unifying theme of love fragments. One side is sub-titled 'if we grow old together' and the second side is 'life in the water.' The cut & paste layout flows perfectly with his words: love, longing, lost opportunities and what may become.
Here is an excerpt from 'life in the water'
If I were one of the fish that flew, or one of the beautiful creatures of the deep, I would have thrown myself at your feet. But I am ugly and I have always been a clumsy animal afraid to leave the cold waters.

Virgin #1

From the intro: "I'm writing the zine I wanted to read." The title accurately describes the author, a virgin, but this zine is more than a zine about virginity. It is someone's journey with identity and trying to understand their sexuality. Starting at age 11, the author logs her first crushes and kisses. The older she becomes, the more she begins to question if she is asexual.
A wonderfully honest zine that I hope will touch others who will share their story in a future issue of Virgin.

Gabrielle covers heavy topics in this issue as she remembers the years of her addiction and working in the sex industry. This zine is a mixture of poetry and journal entries during a dark time in her life but also present day where she is working on processing her experiences while being a new mom. Gabrielle is able to tell her story in a blunt and beautiful way.
An excerpt, "I can feel my jaw clench, and a band of pain clamps over my forehead. It's fear, what I feel moving through me, alive in my veins."

organs of voice and respiration
$3/32 pages/Half size
by Gabrielle Congrave
For me this issue was so powerful because Gabrielle's writing makes it extremely clear the amount of healing involved after years of drug addiction and working in an unhealthy sex industry. Gabrielle writes about her physical scars, a past escort experience and literary work she completed after quitting heroin. She passionately writes about the love she has for her daughter.
An excerpt, "I didn't expect this - complete sobriety, single motherhood in the Northwoods, my sassy daughter, going back to school. Writing. How much I would come to love my loneliness. And now that I have it, there are no words to adequately frame my gratitude."

$3/28 pages/Half size
by Gabrielle Congrave
Gabrielle includes a few journal and blog entries from 2003-2004 in this issue & also writes a commentary of sorts as she looks back on that time. As I read the entries, I could sense the numbness & fog that Gabrielle was in while she was working in the massage parlor, abusing drugs and being in an abusive relationship. Please read with care, the content may be triggering.
It sounded a little bit like hell, to me. To have to sit in that room, watching face after face tell lie after lie on a big screen tv. Waiting to be chosen for purchase.

something very ugly
$3/28 pages/Half size
by Gabrielle Congrave
Gabrielle maintains a good balance of the past and present in this issue. She looks back on her 20-year-old self when she was experimenting with pills, trying heroin for the first time and working in the sex industry. Gabrielle also writes about current things such as, caring for her body, forgiveness, social interactions with others and the loneliness she tends to feel.
"Maybe I'm afraid of seeing that same calculation in a man's eye again.
I don't want to watch them as they judge what I'm worth. Or maybe I'm trying to indicate that I'm uninterested in being chosen."

Gabrielle switches things up a bit in this issue and focuses her writing on present day life. She writes about reclaiming her own sexuality and reworking her past to create a beneficial future. Gabrielle includes self-portraits which tie in nicely with her entries of self-examination.
"Sex is a theater where we act out the stories lodged within us. Always, I am acting out my desire to be broken, to be owned and split apart. To be put in my place."

With Intention: a zine about a person with narcolepsy
$3/32 pages//Half size
by Ming Lai
Ming has written an enlightening zine about narcolepsy. With Intention contains a great balance of Ming's personal experience as well as a plethora of resources. Ming writes about symptoms he began having in his young adulthood, what led to him being diagnosed with narcolepsy, and what it feels like. He discusses the various medications he has taken, being a registered nurse, and useful tips on living with narcolepsy.
There have been a number of times when I've woken up and I'm finding myself walking outside the house with a coffee cup in my hand with coffee init. I should say ceramic coffee cup. And I have no idea how I got there or where the cup came from , yet I know I did not make the coffee, and that the ceramic cup is not mine, and I have no clue as to where to return it to the coffee shop or cafe it must have originated from.

I really enjoy Liz's writing, she has so much heart behind her words, you can feel it through the pages. I appreciate that. I have to admit I became a little teary-eyed reading the beginning of this issue. Liz describes the physical pain she goes through which causes panic attacks. She writes about being brave through her fear and enjoying her life. Liz also includes a piece about New Years in the South, resolutions and food for the soul.
An excerpt, "Don't let those in seats of power dictate how you live your life. Write your own stories, draw your own map & watch the beast recoil & die."

A down and dirty personal zine that isn't afraid to confront girl on girl hate, body hair and the socio-politics of a truly epic game, Humans vs Zombies. Comes complete with beautiful photography and a kick-ass vegan nachos recipe that I'm trying out this weekend.

They write about staying single while queer and coming out as gender variant/trans* in 2010. Sari shares hir difficult experience within the feminist community, the pressure they felt and gender neutral pronouns.
i began feeling like i had to justify my involvement and interest in the feminist community while loudly and constantly proclaiming my gender identity as valid.

Tricia's side deals with the death of her friend, Nina, and the funeral that didn't truly represent her friend. She writes about Nina and their friendship. Tricia also talks about her cousin who lived with her family and her passing at age 27. Tricia's side deals with the death of her friend, Nina, and the funeral that didn't truly represent her friend. She writes about Nina and their friendship. Tricia also talks about her cousin who lived with her family and her passing at age 27. She writes, "... this journey started the moment I realized that I, shawl-wearing-Nina, and anglo-jesus were all counterfeits of acceptability that reflected the values and beliefs of a thoroughly fucked up dominant strain of society."
Your Secretary #5
$2/24 pages/Quarter size
by Jami Sailor
"It's a balancing act which still needs practice."
Diabetes has become a household name for many people. In this zine, Jami does a wonderful job of talking about her own experiences with diabetes which include her family and camp stories. What I enjoyed most was that she included snippets of her camp life, such as what she experienced in camp (not all about diabetes) and how she takes care of herself. The latter is actually very beneficial for everyone as it describes easy ways to take care of ourselves.
