Interested in witty and electrifying words about menstruation, then look no further! All My Fathers Zine
All My Fathers
$1.50/12 pages/Half size
by DJ Frederick

I found this zine to be a beautiful and thoughtful read. DJ Frederick writes about a handful of men in his life that he looked up to as father figures. These men were bosses and co-workers who displayed empathy, kindness, knowledge, and acceptance.

Being so starved for a mentor, and to "get it right" with my dad, I projected my desire for a loving father onto people who were (probably) unaware consciously of how important they were to my growth and emotional developement. This has continued into my fifties, where I am constantly learning more from this "need for the father".

aubade zine #4
aubade #4
virginia stories
$2/40 pages/ Quarter size
by Katie

Katie is an excellent writer so it was no surprise when I became completely engrossed in issue 4 of aubade. She writes, "this zine is about something way bigger than just this state i live in. it's about preserving the places we love--real and imagined. it's about struggling to carve out those places in spite of the enormous obstacles standing in our way." Katie writes about growing up in Virginia, childhood friendships & experiences, revisting her home and eyewitnessing the changes in the surroundings due to developements.

Better Late Than Never Zine #1
Better Late Than Never #1
The Author's Issue
$1/36 pages/Half size
by Carmen

A review publication of the authors (and titles) that influenced or impacted the life of this zine creator. But to say it is just a review publication would be dumbing it down. This zine meanders through the stories and influences each book has on someones life, and in doing so, picks apart the subtlety's of each author and tale, as well as giving a unique glimpse into an anonymous life. A fascinating take on investigating what we pick up during a lifetime. Particularly interesting for those with a love of reading.

The Book of Billy Zine
SOLD OUT!
The Book of Billy
$1/10 pages/Half legal size
by Billy

The bible of Billy Roberts is definitely one I intend to follow from now on. Never before have orgasms, pirates and punk rock been combined to make up one exciting way to live your life. Or attempt to. Billy doesn't pretend to have all the answers, but he winds up being very convincing nevertheless.

Brainscan 30
$3/40 pages/ Quarter size
by Alex Wrekk

In this text heavy issue, Alex writes about her adolescent years living in Utah, being an oddball and how religion factored in her life. She talks about privilege, adventures, and teaching. Alex highlights some her adventures, like starting a band, traveling overseas, zine fests, and exploring the east coast. She also shares the birth of Portland Button Works, unexpected business partner issues, and the positive result of it all.

So, I coasted through life until I dropped out of two colleges, lost my Christian faith at the age of 20, which is right about the time I started making Brainscan Zine. That was 15 years ago July. This is issue #30. and that makes 2 issues a year, not too shabby!

Breakfast at Twilight Zine #4
Breakfast At Twilight #4
the bike issue
$1.50/40 pages/Quarter size
by Erica

I like how Erica incorporated her personal reasons for biking along with some great information for anyone who may be considering cycling as a mode of transportation. She begins by giving a brief recap of not wanting to drive, her decision to become a transportation cyclist, and the improvement of her mental health from biking. Erica also includes a few rants about drivers.

Brooklyn To Mars #3
March 2013
$6/40 pages/Quarter size
by Markus

Markus is a great writer. The words he has put together in this zine filled me with excitement. I wanted to shut off the modern world and just be mindful of the natural world, to create art and write. Each page contains its own passage, but as a whole, this zine comes together to release Markus' thoughts on willpower, movement, inspiration, being yourself, and passion.

If you don't feel like a blooming flower when you're with your friends, you've got to let them go. We're here to prop each other up and help each other out. If you can't lean on your buddies like a wine vine on a chain link fence, you need to spread your roots until you find solid ground.

Chronic Illness Zine
chronic
a story about chronic illness
$3/64 pages/Half size
by Sam

Chronic is a text-heavy zine about Sam's sleep disorder that she's been dealing with for years since her childhood. As I followed Sam's story through her college years, various doctor appointments, sleep study and treatment in the health care system, I found myself staying frustrated with the ups-and-downs that Sam continuously faced. Sam includes info on able privilege and a recommended reading list. A great read for anyone who is dealing with a chronic illness.

I think the biggest lesson for me has been to understand that I am not in control and that I have to forgive myself for not being able to do everything I/other people want me to do. Many people have to learn this lesson when they get old - I had to learn it in my 20s.
I'm angry about that, but I have to let go of the anger too.

Cloud Factory Zine

The duo interview each other about various topics; such as music, food, art, superpowers and the perfect day. It's a fantastic collaboration.

from Ryan, "Here I am, with my sad sads, in a jail cell awaiting my next do-over as a bleached moon passes by the night. I draw what I can, but feeling a bump'd way of looking at it I stop and flow to sleep. I read a thousand walls that imprison me, in this factory of monsters."

Cloud Factory Zine #3
cloud factory #3
march 2012
$3/48 pages/Half size
by Laura & Ryan

Laura & Ryan continue to bring us text heavy writing, art, and comics. I feel like Ryan wrote some deep stuff in this issue. He discusses looking back on life before jail, briefly touches on how he ended up behind bars, and the emptiness that encompasses him. I always enjoy the Q&A between Laura and Ryan which covers music, places, people, and lots more. Ryan's writing definitely inspires me to be extra grateful for my freedom.

I'm angst and waste and whatever society needs me to be. I'm "Waldo". I'm fucked. I'm normal I'm nice I'm sad and sometimes a shitload mad at the way 2+2=5 and why I'm here. I'm just anyone and no one ... writing to you.
