by Hannah
I think this zine is one of those necessary issues that should be a part of a zinesters collection; especially if you enjoy zines that deal with mental health issues. There is a trigger warning in the introduction because some parts of the zine deal with self-injury and suicide. The contents include the biological basics of depression, good dietary sources, creating art, a tutorial for sharpie watercolors, four pieces written by other female zinesters, book reviews and mental health resources.
Hannah writes, "This zine focuses on ways to fight depression that go beyond the usual, mainstream measures like medication and therapy. Ways that are more radical, in the sense that they go to the roots of how we live our lives and treat our bodies."

by Bettie

Bettie writes that her initial intentions with this zine were to include a broad spectrum of content but in the end she found the content to mostly be revolved around her mental health. I'm glad her focus did end up being on her metal health because I found her writing to be real and the issues she faces are issues that many of us can relate to. Bettie describes her depression, meds, doctors, and happiness.

An excerpt,"The only change coming from CPN to psychiatrist to crisis practitioner like a ticking bomb. Occasionally the bomb would go off. I'd od on cocktails of prescription drugs, go to the hospital, get referred to CRHT, lather, rinse, repeat"

Bettie writes in the introduction, "This issue was written during a period of recovery from a depressive episode and a suicide attempt. It covers a stay in hospital, tells the story of my paranoia, and outlines my hope for the future."

by Katie

This is a wonderful & text heavy zine. I was thrilled to read Katie write in such a gracious way about how she views life and how she wants to live her life. Katie executes her feelings well when she describes her life changes and flowing through life without falling into a mundane pattern. She goes into depth about living on her own, being financially independent, working, friendships and relationships. Katie writes about her family, her inspirations and more!

From the intro, "It's a little lonelier, a little quieter, a little more peaceful. It's been a year of big decisions and lots of change. A year of firsts, and a year of recovery. It's about moving to Northern Virginia, getting my first job, and trying to keep my soul intact."

This zine was such a fantastic read. I thoroughly enjoyed the way Katie was able to walk back in time and describe the parts of Virginia that she grew up in. She has moved away from Virginia and describes how the communities there are changing and essentially disappearing.
An excerpt,"this zine started off as a project about virginia, but quickly turned into something else. this zine is about something way bigger than just this state i live in. it's about preserving the places we love--real and imagined."

Baby Girl 7
A journey of a daughter and her mother
$2/40 pages/Half size
by Lindsey

When Lindsey was 13 years old her mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Lindsey wrote about the grueling experience that her family went through over an eight year time period after her mother's diagnosis. Printed inside of this issue are some of her journal entries. It is text heavy, emotional and an incredible experience to briefly see into someone's life who is dealing with something as major as cancer. Lindsey also adds vignettes dealing with her resentment, regrets, gratitude, strength, guilt, anger, fear and relationships with her mother & sister.

An excerpt, "It's an odd way to live life, waiting for your mother to die. Holidays fill me with a mix of trepidation and pressure-I feel the need to make each subsequentholiday better than the last, in case it is my mom's last."

by Coco

Coco writes about the world and her personal surroundings in such a beautiful and vivid way. She shares parts of her life where she dealt with abuse and how she is processing her sister's mental illness. Coco is finding her way, flowing through life regardless if there is a master plan laid out in front of her to help guide her or not. This zine is awesome.

An excerpt, "I'm learning to acknowledge and respect the pain and sadness in the world, as it affects me and as it affect others. It gives me the freedom to search for the balance, for the other end of the spectrum."
